Following your liposuction surgery, you will have the choice of going home that day or spending the night in one of our suites at the Rose Ambulatory Surgical Center in Denver. Several factors may influence whether you should stay the night or have your procedure performed on an out-patient basis:
- Number of areas and amount of fat removed
- Other procedures performed simultaneously
- Personal preference
You will experience some pain following the liposuction surgery; however, it is generally fairly mild. Most patients do not experience much more than a bit of stiffness and soreness. Denver plastic surgeons Dr. John A. Grossman and Dr. Philippe A. Capraro will prescribe pain medication to reduce the discomfort.
Follow-Up Care
You will need to wear special compression garments for three to six weeks to control the swelling and help shape your new body contour. These garments can be changed daily.
Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro encourage you to resume physical activity as soon as you feel up to it. Your new body contour should motivate you to engage in a normal exercise regimen promptly following surgery. Most patients are able to return to work within one week.
The absorbable sutures will be covered with a waterproof dressing, so you will be able to shower shortly following your liposuction procedure. However, you should not take a bath until you are fully healed and all bruising and swelling have subsided.
Your liposuction results should be noticeable immediately. Over the next few weeks, your new body shape will continue to improve as the swelling subsides. Your scars will soften, turning from red to pink to white. This process may take several months to complete.
You should expect your skin tissue in the treated region to remain firm and swollen for several weeks, possibly even a few months. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will give you detailed instructions on how to properly massage the treated areas to facilitate the healing process.
Post-Surgical Weight Gain
You may find that you gain some weight immediately following your liposuction surgery. This is natural, resulting from the swelling and fluid retention. Therefore, it is important that you carefully monitor your weight for a few weeks after surgery. This will serve two purposes: it will help you determine whether the fluid is properly dissipating, and it will ensure that you do not gain additional weight due to remaining sedentary during the recovery period.
If you have any questions while you are recovering, please do not hesitate to call us. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro are always available to answer any questions you may have.
