Grossman Plastic Surgery has been helping women achieve beautiful, natural looking breasts for more than 30 years. Whether you are unhappy with the size and shape of your breasts or you simply wish to recapture the perkiness they had before aging and childbirth, breast augmentation may be the option to achieve your cosmetic goals.
Am I a Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is an ideal procedure if you wish to:
- Enhance the size and fullness of small breasts
- Correct asymmetrical breasts
- Correct mildly sagging breasts
- Correct a loss of volume caused by pregnancy
- Undergo breast reconstruction following a mastectomy
If you would like to reverse the effects of more significant sagging caused by the aging process, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro may recommend a breast lift in conjunction with your breast augmentation procedure.
Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
Your breast augmentation procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis generally using general anesthesia. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will make an incision either in the fold beneath the breasts or around the edge of the areola. Depending on your unique body contours and the goals of your procedure, a space is developed behind the breast tissue and usually behind the pectoral (chest) muscle as well. The entire procedure will usually take 1-1 ½ hours.
At your initial consultation, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will discuss your various options for breast implant sizing and type of implant. They will recommend the appropriate cup size and type of implant based on your unique body characteristics and desired aesthetic goals. In general, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro prefer silicone gel implants to saline implants because silicone implants:
- Feel more natural
- Are more durable
- Maintain their shape better when they break
All breast implants will break eventually – it’s just a matter of time. The manufacturers suggest that the average lifespan of a breast implant is between 10 and 20 years. Silicone gel implants seem to last longer than saline implants. When a saline implant breaks, the implant goes flat over a period of about a week. A silicone implant does not change its size, shape, or feel when it breaks. This silicone is not absorbed into the body.
Recovery and Follow-Up Care
You should be able to resume mild to moderate activity within a few days, but it is important to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activity for about three to four weeks. You may experience some swelling and bruising following surgery. This will gradually subside over several weeks as you heal. It is natural to experience some firmness in your breasts immediately following your procedure, but this will subside over time as well.
