Breast Augmentation Incision Options

Denver and Littleton, Colorado

When considering breast augmentation, you will have three incision options to choose from. There are pros and cons to each option, and ultimately you must work with our Denver plastic surgeons to determine which one will deliver the best results for your unique body type and aesthetic goals.

The three breast augmentation incision options are:

  • Inframammary
  • Peri-areolar
  • Transaxillary

At your initial consultation, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will discuss each breast augmentation incision option with you in great detail and recommend the best one for you.

Inframammary Incision Option

If you choose the inframammary incision option, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will make the incision at the breast crease where your breast meets your rib cage. This is the most common breast augmentation incision option since it provides our Denver plastic surgeons with the greatest amount of control when placing your breast implant.

This versatile approach offers many benefits:

  • Requires a small incision which remains hidden in the breast fold
  • Scar is well concealed by clothing, swimsuits, or underwear
  • Will not interfere with breast feeding
  • Ideal option for breast augmentation with silicone breast implants

If you would like to improve asymmetrical breasts, the inframammary incision may be your best option since it provides Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro with greater visibility when working with your breast tissue.

There are two main drawbacks to the inframammary incision option. The incision may be irritated by your bra during the recovery period, and your scar will remain red for a longer period of time (up to 12-18 months).

Peri-Areolar Incision Option

The peri-areolar incision is made around the nipple. It generally results in a thin scar that blends in with the areola, making it less visible than the scars formed by other incision options. The peri-areolar incision results in a very precise formation of the breast implant pocket, making it an ideal option to use with both saline and silicone breast implants. Due to the placement of the incision around the nipple, the peri-areolar option is ideally suited to correct nipple inversion.

Potential drawbacks to the peri-areolar option include:

  • Loss of nipple sensation
  • Interference with breast feeding

Transaxillary Incision Option

In the transaxillary option, your incision is made on the armpit. This placement eliminates any visible scarring on the breast. It is most commonly used with submuscular breast implant placement.

However, the transaxillary incision option also has several drawbacks. If your scar thickens, it will be very noticeable when raising your arm in a low-cut gown or while wearing a bathing suit. This incision location also increases your risk of uneven placement of the breast implants, and there is a greater chance that your implants may rest too high on the chest. Due to these drawbacks, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro rarely use this option.
