Is there a minimum age for female breast augmentation?
At Grossman Plastic Surgery, we do not recommend breast augmentation for anyone under the age of 18. This is due more to emotional maturity than physical maturity. Female breast augmentation surgery is a highly personal decision that involves an alteration of your body image, and it is important that you possess the emotional maturity to make this important decision. In addition, the FDA requires that a patient must be at least 22 years of age to have a silicone implant. There is no minimum age for a saline implant.
Can breast augmentation be performed under local anesthesia?
Yes, it is possible to perform breast augmentation under local anesthesia. However, Denver plastic surgeons Dr. John A. Grossman and Dr. Philippe A. Capraro prefer to use general anesthesia. If you opt for local anesthesia, Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro recommend using the thoracic epidural technique, where the anesthesiologist creates a local block for the entire chest area and administers sedation.
Can I undergo breast augmentation if I plan on having children in the future?
Yes. Breast implants should not interfere with childbearing, and most women will still be able to breast feed after their procedure. If your nipple must be completely separated from the milk ducts during your breast surgery, it may affect your ability to breast feed.
Do I need to quit smoking before my breast surgery?
Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro recommend quitting smoking because the nicotine in cigarettes may adversely affect the healing process. To reduce the risk of complications with your breast surgery and post-operative recovery, you should stop smoking cigarettes and using nicotine replacement medications at least three weeks prior to surgery.
Can I undergo breast augmentation if I have a family history of breast cancer?
Yes. While in theory breast implants may interfere with a mammography, most facilities can generally obtain accurate mammogram readings if you have implants. However, you should have a diagnostic mammogram performed instead of a screening.
Where is the breast surgery performed?
Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro perform all breast augmentation procedures at their operating suites at the Rose Ambulatory Surgery Center in Denver. It is a fully licensed and accredited facility. In most cases, your surgery will be performed on an outpatient basis.
My girlfriend has 325 cc. implants and I like the way they look. Can I get the same implants?
Generally, the same size implants will result in different outcomes for different people. Factors such as chest dimensions, amount of breast tissue, amount of skin, and skin elasticity will affect the way your results look. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will evaluate your unique body type and cosmetic goals before recommending the appropriate breast implant size to suit your needs.
