Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to reshape and improve the appearance of your labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips) of your vagina. Excess skin is removed and shaped to alter the size and symmetry of your labia. This procedure can be performed for strictly cosmetic purposes, or it can be performed to help relieve pain and discomfort caused by an enlarged labia.
Am I a Candidate for Labiaplasty?
Enlarged labia are a very common condition that occurs for a variety of reasons. For some women, this condition is congenital (they were born with it). For others, it may occur as a result of pregnancy or aging. Regardless of the cause, the condition can lead to:
- Embarrassment during sexual intercourse
- Discomfort when wearing bathing suits, tight clothes, or jogging shorts
- Irritation and pain during intercourse
- Irritation when performing everyday activities
Grossman Plastic Surgery can help you resolve both aesthetic and functional issues caused by your enlarged labia. If you experience any of the above-mentioned problems, you will most likely benefit greatly from the labiaplasty procedure. Undergoing a labiaplasty can help you:
- Improve the appearance of your vagina and vulva
- Reduce self consciousness during sexual intercourse
- Boost self confidence
- Relieve discomfort caused by clothes rubbing against the labia
- Eliminate pain during sexual intercourse
- Improve sexual satisfaction that is hampered by large labia
The Labiaplasty Procedure
Denver plastic surgeons Dr. John A. Grossman and Dr. Philippe A. Capraro customize your labiaplasty procedure based on your unique case. The procedure is generally performed under general anesthesia, but it may also be done under local anesthesia or IV with sedation if you prefer.
Incisions are made to remove excess tissue or to correct uneven labia. The reduction design and placement of scars is important and will usually be invisible after healing. The procedure is generally performed on an out-patient basis, and recovery takes about ten days. You should experience minimal discomfort, and sexual sensation will not be affected.
Recovery and Follow-Up Care
There is no overnight stay required for your labiaplasty procedure. Dr. Grossman and Dr. Capraro will give you detailed follow-up care instructions, which generally involve carefully washing the region and using antibiotic creams to prevent infection. It is important to diligently follow these instructions to facilitate proper healing. Recovery should take approximately 7-10 days, and discomfort will be minimal.
You can generally return to work within two to four days of your surgery, but you should refrain from vigorous activities such as jogging, biking, and heavy lifting for four to six weeks. It will take about six weeks before you can resume sexual activity.
